Columbus Bishop Watterson
Wins First State Boys Basketball Championship
Eagles win the title over
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 55-52
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Third-ranked Columbus Bishop
Watterson held off a strong second half run by unranked
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in the OHSAA Division II
championship game to win its first boys basketball state
title 55-52 in Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein
Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in
Columbus.
After building a 10 point lead in the second quarter the
Eagles saw their largest lead of the day whittled down to
two points with 20 seconds left to play in the game after
SVSM senior Jalen Hudson converted on two free throws. An
Irish foul with 11 seconds to play sent Watterson junior
Tommy Geraghty to the line where he made one of two free
throws to give Watterson a three point lead. SVSM was left
with one more opportunity when senior Franshon Bickley’s
three-point field goal from the left wing missed as time
expired, making Watterson the champion.
In its first trip to the state tournament and championship
game, Watterson (28-1) was led in scoring by juniors Cody
Calhoun and Matt Hughes, who each scored 14 points. Senior
Bryan Jackson added 12 points to help pace the Eagles.
“We’re thrilled to be here, thrilled to be state champs,”
said Watterson head coach Vince Lombardo. “We played two
great ball clubs – I think beating (Kettering) Alter and St.
Vincent-St. Mary, with the history they’ve had coming in,
and coming in here the first time for our guys, just a
tremendous job by our young men.”

September 10 - CDAB
Announces Changes To Sectional Site Selection
The Central District Athletic Board (CDAB) has made a major
change in how Sectional Tournament sites will be determined
in the sports of Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball
and Softball. Schools will continue to seed on line and
conduct an open draw meeting for each of these sports but
tournament sites will now be based on seed. For Sectional
level games only, the better seeded team
will be given the opportunity to host the game. District
level games will still be played at neutral sites determined
by the CDAB.
